Member Update - September 2006
Welcome to the Member Update! Every couple months or so, we plan to publish a summary
of current news, Board activity, and past event wrap-ups. This will be sent exclusively
to members, as a way for you to keep in touch with Seattle Atheists, find out what's
happening, and how you can get involved. It's a work in progress, so
please share any feedback you have.
Fremont Fair Review
Our first fair booth was a huge success! Not only did we talk to tons of people,
we also distributed approximately 200 brochures, 80 buttons, and 30 magnets, and
received over $200 in donations. Reception was very friendly, and most people who
visited were supportive and happy to find our group. Perhaps atheists are less shocking
when sharing the event with naked bicyclists, flamboyant parade costumes, and the
Young Republicans. There are a few pictures of our booth in the
photo gallery.
Freethinkers' Picnic Review
The 2nd Annual Freethinkers Picnic was held on the 4th of July.
It was another afternoon of fun for all. People from various groups throughout the
region enjoyed a fabulous potluck dinner, games on the lawn, and general mingling.
It was another fun time for meeting people from the other organizations. You can
check out a few pictures in the photo gallery.

Upcoming Events
Coming up:
Michael Shermer on Evolution - Tuesday, September 12th, at Town Hall
Not affiliated with Seattle Atheists at all, just wanted to let those know that
are interested. Bio and more info on the
Town Hall site. $5 at the door only, space is limited.
Member Meeting and Elections - Sunday, September 24th. - See below!
Richard Dawkins (TBA) - October 26th.
Yes, you read correctly! The preeminent UK evolution expert is coming to town to
promote his upcoming book, and Seattle Atheists has been invited to host a special
event with him. Details are still being coordinated, but you can bet that members
will be invited to a small luncheon, discussion, or something similar. We'll let
you know as soon as more information emerges.
In addition, there are always several member-hosted social activities and events
from other groups going on. If you're interested in getting to know some fellow
Atheists, check the calendar of events on the
Seattle Atheist Yahoo group.
Board Elections!
It's that time again.. The September Member Meeting will include elections for all
board positions. In an effort to hold the meeting at a convenient time and place
for most people to attend, it will be on a Sunday afternoon (no church conflicts,
hopefully!), in north Seattle at the Greenwood Library.

It's important that we get as much member attendance as possible,
and definitely consider running for a board position if you're interested in helping
to provide direction for Seattle Atheists. We'll also be voting on three amendments
to our Constitution and Bylaws. Everything you could possibly want to know about
the board and the election process can be found on the handy
Elections page. So read up, put it on your calendar, send in your nominations,
and hope to see you on the 24th!

Introducing... Committees!
In order to better focus our efforts on acheiving our goals, we have formed 4 standing
committees: Administration, Membership Services, Outreach, and Activities. Our intent
is that these will be active committees of members that meet regularly to generate
and enact ideas. Details of each committee can be found in the June 22 board meeting
minutes (see minutes page). We are just beginning to get the committees up and running,
so we could really used your help! Just
send us an email with your interest.
Thanks for reading the Member Update! Please
let us know if there's anything we can do to make it more valuable to you.
