Member Update - January 2007

Welcome to the Member Update! Every couple months or so, we plan to publish a summary of current news, Board activity, and past event wrap-ups. This will be sent exclusively to members, as a way for you to keep in touch with Seattle Atheists, find out what's happening, and how you can get involved. It's a work in progress, so please share any feedback you have.

Gift Wrapping 2006
As part of our community outreach efforts, members of Seattle Atheists participated in the 2nd annual gift wrapping events at Boarders Books. We raised $751.50 that will be donated to Children’s Hospital. In addition to the better-than-anticipated fundraising efforts, the gift wrapping caught the attention of local radio personality Dave Ross. Our president, Kyle Hepworth, appeared on the talk-radio show in December.

Committee Reports
The Activities Committee has been planning a number of things. For the upcoming holidays, we once organized our gift-wrapping services at area bookstores to raise money for Children's Hospital. The Committee also has two (two!) speakers lined up for early 2007, including the author of Fleeing Fundamentalism, and a representative from a conservative atheist group.
Be sure to mark your calendar for the national American Atheists convention this spring over Easter weekend right here in Seattle. We are currently looking into ways that Seattle Atheists can be a part of this unique event. If you would like to help serve on the Activities committee, please consider attending the next meeting. Contact Wendy with any questions.
---------------
At the first Membership Committee meeting, we discussed revamping the welcome packet for new members, considered next year's budget, and planned to create a member survey. These surveys will enable us to get feedback about how we can improve Seattle Atheists and continue to offer valuable services to members and the community. If you would like to be a part of the Membership committee, contact Jen.
---------------
The Outreach Committee discussed ways to increase our visibility in the community. One good way would be to spread the word about our gift-wrapping work to the media. We are also looking into affiliating with other national groups. Last year, our booth at the Fremont Fair provided an excellent outreach opportunity. We are planning to attend the Fair again in 2007, and are also exploring other festivals or parades we might participate in. If you would like to help with the Outreach committee, contact Shellie for more information.
---------------
The Administration Committee started work on a budget for the new year and took care of some administrative tasks for the new board. We also resolved an issue with Paypal so that we can now accept memberships and donations online. If you would like to be a part of the Administration committee, contact Kyle.
---------------
The Web Committee handles the technical aspects of the Seattle Atheists website. Because of problems with our past host, we switched hosting plans and now have a ton more space, @seattleatheists.org email addresses, and vastly superior customer service. To take advantage of our website's new home, we are in the process of redesigning the website with some great new features, and a more user-friendly interface for new people as well as members. A sneak peek of these ideas include a newlinks or blog feature, online membership signup, a better photo gallery, and a new, engaging library area. If you would like to help contribute to the Website Committee, please contact Jeff for information and the next meeting.

Blood Drive
Seattle Atheists held its quarterly blood drive in November. The next blood drive will take place on Thursday, January 25, 2007. For donor information, locations and hours, visit www.psbc.org

Library
The Seattle Atheists library is a great resource for learning more about atheism and atheists. We recently received a donation of over 20 new books. For more information on the library, visit the library page at http://www.seattleatheists.org/atheist_library.shtml or contact our librarian Jami Blackann at jami.blackann@seattleatheists.org.
