NW Freethought Conference scholarships

The deadline is approaching, so contact us if you are in need of a scholarship to the conference!

Seattle Atheists is offering four 50% scholarships to the Northwest Freethought Alliance Regional Conference. The cost for the conference is $125, so scholarship recipients will be able to attend the full conference (3 days) for only $62.

To apply for the scholarship, send us a brief essay explaining why would like to attend the conference and what you hope to gain from the experience.

Deadline: Feb. 1st. We will notify recipients by Feb. 15.

Marc Adams on “From fundamentalism to Freedom,” Jan. 10

The next Seattle Atheists membership meeting is co-sponsored by the Humanists of Washington. Marc Adams will present a talk entitled, “From Fundamentalism to Freedom.” Adams is an author, artist, and activist, and has written eight books, including “The Preacher’s Son” and “The Do’s and Don’ts of Dealing with the Religious Right.” He runs the non-profit organization HeartStrong which travels around the country to religious colleges and universities to let GLBT students at these schools know there is a way out.

In addition to the presentation and a Q&A session with Mr. Adams, there will be discussion, announcements, and updates from both Humanists of Washington and Seattle Atheists. Many thanks to Humanists of Washington for co-sponsoring this event with Seattle Atheists.

This event is free and open to the the public, but the venue is limited to 75 people, so arrive early.

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, Jan. 10, 2:00 pm at the Miller Community Center, 330 19th Ave. E in Capitol Hill. There is parking available in adjacent lots.

Mark Lilla speaks on separation of church and state at UW, Jan. 12

Mark Lilla, Professor of Humanities at Columbia University, will speak on on the separation of church and state as part of the Luce Lectures in Religion and Human Security. Lilla says that “the revival of a radical political theology in Islam offers an opportunity to reconsider the history of church-state relations in the West and to think harder about the political challenges that religion presents today.”

WHEN AND WHERE: Tues., Jan. 12, at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. The talk will be held in Kane 210 on the University of Washington campus. This event is free and open to the public.
