Membership Meeting

January 12th, 2009

January 18, 2009
2:00 PM
Greenlake Library

Dr. Valerie Tarico will be giving a presentation called “Between Hollywood and Mars Hill.”

Hollywood offers easy thrills. Christianity offers easy answers. How can freethinkers raise thoughtful moral children who are resilient in the face of cultural pressures such as these? Psychologist and author Valerie Tarico will discuss moral development and how we can help the children we love to grow strengths such as rationality, generosity, and compassion. As a former fundamentalist, Dr. Tarico will also present her insights about how best to inoculate children against religious recruiting, bolstering their ability to find their own answers and social support.

Dr. Tarico is author of The Dark Side: How Evangelical Teachings Corrupt Love and Truth. She hosts “Christianity in the Public Square,” a monthly series on Moral Politics Television, and is the founder of WisdomCommons.org. She writes regularly for the Huffington Post. December titles included “Ancient Mythic Origins of the Christmas Story” and “Reason’s Greetings.”

Afterwards there will be a Q&A, and then we’ll have a group discussion on some of the recent issues facing atheists as well as a look at what is in store for Seattle Atheists in 2009.
