Seattle Atheists would like to express its deepest sympathies and concern for the people of Japan and other areas affected by the recent earthquakes and tsunami starting on March 10, 2011.
The 8.9 earthquake, the 5th-strongest recorded, has generated more than 50 aftershocks, many over 6.0. Casualties, still climbing, are currently estimated at 1,000, including an estimated 300 in the coastal city of Sendai, closest to the epicenter.
Our thoughts are with the people of Japan, and with the families of those who have lost loved ones. Seattle Atheists recommends the following aid organizations (all secular) for members wishing to assist with rescue and recovery efforts:
- Secular and Humanists Aid and Relief Efforts (SHARE)
- Humanist Charities
- Richard Dawkins Foundation
- Save the Children
- International Red Cross
Additionally, if you are looking for or know the location of a person in the affected area, Google has reactivated its People Finder app; you can find it at http://www.google.com/crisisresponse/japanquake2011.html.
If you can help, please help. As additional organizations move to assist the people of Japan, we’ll update this list.
