SA Presents: Valerie Tarico

May 15, 2011 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Valerie Tarico
RSVP on our meetup!

“Lean not unto your own understanding.” “Wives submit to your husbands.” “God hates fags.”

Which buzz phrases from your religious past–or religious surroundings–are still stuck in your brain? Each of us, whether religious or not, has had our perceptions shaped by the Christian world around us.

Valerie Tarico will talk to us about the stages of recovery from religion, pitfalls to avoid, and how atheists can reclaim fundamental human experiences like wonder and moral clarity that believers say are theirs alone.

As a psychologist and former fundamentalist, Valerie Tarico explores the intersection between belief and psychology with candor and compassion. Her most recent book, Trusting Doubt: A Former Evangelical Looks at Old Beliefs in a New Light, helps recovering Evangelicals clear their minds of dogma that just doesn’t want to let go. Her articles can be found regularly in the Green and Religion sections of the Huffington Post. She is also the founder of www.WisdomCommons.org, an interactive library of quotes, stories, proverbs and poems that showcase humanity’s shared moral core. You can find more of Tarico’s work at her youtube channel, blog and website.

Light refreshments will be provided.

We also encourage you to bring canned food items for our year-round Seattle Atheists SeasonLESS Food Drive. We’ll donate the food we collect to Family Works and Volunteers of America food banks in the name of Seattle Atheists.

Food banks everywhere are experiencing a sharp decrease in the amount of food available to hungry families. It’s time to make sure that giving continues, even AFTER the traditional holiday giving season.
