Sunday, September 21st, 1:00 pm
Greenwood Branch Library

Election time! Get ready! Are you interested in playing an integral role in Seattle Atheists direction? Do you have a talent for stating the cause? Are you itching to use that vote that your membership dues get you?

This year we will be electing nine Board of Directors positions, and we need you to give your input. It’s your organization, and this is how to make sure your voice is heard.

Click here to view statements from the candidates.

How it works:
There are 4 Officer positions (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer), which last for a 2 year term.

There are also 5 Member-at-Large positions, that are each 1 year terms.

We will begin accepting nominations (yes you can nominate yourself), beginning at the August 3rd meeting. As we get them, we will be posting names and a short candidate statement on the website: http://www.seattleatheists.org/elections2008

How the voting works:
During the meeting, we will still be accepting nominations (although we encourage you to submit yours early along with a statement). We start with the Presidents position, and move down through there, so that anyone who does not win the position they are hoping for, may run again for a lower position.

The 5 Member-at-Large positions are all voted on at once, after the Officers have been elected.

Then the new Board will close out the rest of the meeting.

See you there!
Kyle Hepworth

May 16-17

Lots of fun last year, until we got rained out, but it looks good this year. We have a booth and we’ll be answering questions and distributing merchandise. Buttons, magnets, T-shirts, and bumperstickers will all be available. All we need are some interested volunteers. If you’re interested in giving us a hand, contact our Secretary, for more information.

The booth is to provide information about the organization, and let other atheists know that we’re out there. It’s a great experience every time we do it. We normally get a lot of positive feedback from the community.

Even if you can’t lend a hand, be sure to stop by and say, “Hi.” Our friends the Humanists of Washington will be there, too.

PBS has posted for online viewing the documentary “Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial,” an excellent film that covers the federal case of Kitzmiller v. Dover School District.

“In 2004, the Dover school board ordered science teachers to read a statement to high school biology students suggesting that there is an alternative to Darwin’s theory of evolution called intelligent design—the idea that life is too complex to have evolved naturally and therefore must have been designed by an intelligent agent. The teachers refused to comply. …Later, parents opposed to intelligent design filed a lawsuit in federal court accusing the school board of violating the constitutional separation of church and state.”

It originally aired on November 13th. It’s a total runtime of about 2 hours, but it’s split up into 12 chapters online.
