- Q: What is Seattle Atheists?
A: Seattle Atheists is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the
atheist community in the Seattle area. We strive to promote understanding and respect
toward all freethinkers by providing information, creating a sense of fellowship,
actively opposing discrimination, and above all, emphasizing reason and critical
thinking over supernaturalism.
- Q: How long have you been around? How many members are there?
A: We have been registered as an educational non-profit in the state of Washington
since September of 2003. In 2006 we were approved as a non-profit on the federal
level. Our paid membership is over 60 last time we checked. We also host a Yahoo.com group called SeattleAtheists and another called
SeattleAtheistsForum. There are around 300 people who participate in these free
online forums.
- Q: How can I get in contect with you?
A:Go to our contact information page or
feel free to e-mail any member of the Board. We are
happy to answer your questions and can fill you in on
upcoming events.
- Q: What type of things does this group do together?
A: Check out the
Picture Gallery for some good examples. The purpose of the group is to provide
an education service to the community. We help atheists in the Seattle area to connect
with other atheists and we try to make a positive impact on the community. We have
participated in legal battles to help remove 'under God' from the Pledge of allegiance,
and we occasionally bring in speakers. That doesn't mean we are all about work all
the time. We are a very social group and we often have brunches and parties to celebrate
life, accomplishments, holidays, etc. among friends. We go to beaches, parks, bike
rides, and hikes together. We have dinners and go to shows together, and even perform
karaoke sometimes. Check out the calendar for
more details.
Just like any other group of individuals that want to fit in to a group of like
minded people, we get together to do fun things we all enjoy. It's an environment
where we feel safe that nobody is going to break out a bible or say 'God bless you!'
when you sneeze.
- Q: When are your meetings?
A: Generally monthly we have some type of new person event to welcome newcomers
and every other month we have official meetings that members can attend.
Check out the calendar for more details.
- Q: Do you give back to the community like churches do?
A: YES! We have formed this non-profit group in part to be able to provide
community services and to raise funds for executing tasks that help educate the
public and change the image of atheism.
We have regular blood drives, perform ironic Christmas wrapping, and recently raised
money to hire a lawyer and help in the fight to restore the pledge of allegiance
to its original version, without the divisive words "under god". We also raised
money to provide relief for the victims of the December 2004 Tsunami, and are currently
forming a volunteer task group to go out and give back to our community.
