Debate on 11/19/2016: “Christianity, Good & Bad”

Did Christianity fail in its centuries-long efforts to create a better society? Or did Christian values give rise to modern, secular virtues? What effect does Christianity have on the US today? How has Christianity brought good to the world, and how has it brought harm?

Local atheist blogger Bob Seidensticker argues that Christianity is predominantly bad. Arguing that it is mostly good is “Agnostic X”, whose anonymity allows for frank discussion on a controversial topic. He is also local, and most attendees will recognize him. A moderator, local atheist Jonathan Tweet, enforces ground rules to keep the conversation honest. No evasion or closed-mindedness allowed. While each debater hopes to be considered “right”, the prevailing purpose of the debate is to create and share a meaningful conversation that avoids the pitfalls of us-versus-them thinking. Ends with Q&A.

“Christianity” is the third topic in Seattle Atheists’ series of moderated debates. Previous topics were “Islam & Islamophobia” and “What atheists can know about Jesus”.
